President's Message for February 2009
Thursday, February 05, 2009
Happy, healthy New Year everyone!
Of course, in the winter cold, Jim and I are leaving our bees alone, to cluster and keep warm together in their hives. We’ve been doing much of the same! Hope you are, too! Keep warm and well!
Jim and I might be on TV February 8, on the New York 1 channel.
You may not know, but beekeeping is technically illegal in New York City. Beekeeping is currently classified the same way as if someone kept a lion or tiger in their apartment, as “dangerous wild animals.”
I know very well, because I got “busted” for keeping bees in Manhattan. Thank goodness, Clifford and Conni Still enabled me to move them to Long Island.
Jim is teaching a novice beekeeper course at the Central Park Zoo. It’s very well attended and successful. He’s working with a number of City agencies and officials, and philanthropies to make beekeeping legal, and install beehives in neighborhood gardens to pollinate fruit and vegetables for the poor. And the TV station contacted us to cover the story!
We’re excited!
And, looking forward to seeing you at our first meeting of 2009, on February 15!
Thanks for all you do for our Club!
Here's another good recipe from our National Honey Board, with a spicy Middle Eastern flavor and side dish suggestions, perfect for a cold winter night!
Honey BBQ – Marinated Chicken Drumsticks (makes 4 servings)
1 lb. chicken drumsticks
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 Tablespoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon crushed peppercorns
1/4 teaspoon hot chili sauce
Salt, to taste
Place chicken in large shallow dish. Add ketchup, honey, soy sauce, lemon juice, and vegetable oil, along with pepper, chili sauce, and salt. Cover the dish and let it stand for about 1 hour in the refrigerator. Prepare to grill, then grill to desired doneness.
In Lebanon, they would serve this dish with baked sweet potatoes and beans, along with a salad of cucumbers, carrots, and red sweet pepper strips.
Mmmm!
Enjoy!
Best always, as we begin the 60th successful year of our Long Island Beekeepers Club!
