President's Message for March 2009
Monday, March 16, 2009
Hi everyone!
My husband Jim Fischer and I wish you well as we travel toward Spring with our bees!
Not much to report, since I decided to cancel the February meeting because of no speaker – staying in indoor “cluster mode”!
But on March 22 in Holtsville, we will have NY State Apiarist Paul Cappy, and you will have an opportunity to have all your questions and concerns about apiary registration answered from the source.
I’m sure that our Master Beekeepers will weigh in about Spring management of our colonies, and we can order package bees too. Bring your checkbook!
Jim’s been on TV and radio here and abroad about his efforts working with the politicians here in New York City to make beekeeping legal. Right now, honey bees are designated as “dangerous animals”. Jim’s teaching a novice class at the Central Park Zoo every Sunday morning in the hope his work will come to fruition. The idea is to have community gardens where poor people can grow fresh fruits and vegetables, because the supermarkets in those neighborhoods have largely closed, and the people cannot obtain fresh food. This is a major health issue and economic issue. Hopefully the bees can help!
Jim is also working with charitable agencies like Heifer International and Just Food for seed money for these projects.
I was “busted” for having bees in NYC, and that’s how they ended up in Clifford and Conni Still’s backyard. And that’s how I ended up as your President!
By the way, if you haven’t yet, send Conni “Bee Well” wishes – she was in the hospital. But thank goodness, she’s OK!

Citrus fruits are in season! My favorite is grapefruit.
Here's a good recipe for beekeepers using grapefruit - from Health.com!
Honey-broiled Grapefruit with Walnuts
Only 170 calories and so healthy!
Preheat broiler.
Cut 1 grapefruit in half.
Spread 2 teaspoons honey on top.
Broil for 7 minutes or until the edges are golden.
Top with 1 tablespoon chopped walnuts.
Skinny Secret: People who ate half a grapefruit 3 times a day lost 3.6
pounds in 12 weeks - 3 pounds more than those who didn't. The grapefruit
eaters had smaller waistlines too.
Looking forward to seeing you in March!
