President's Message for July 2008

On Father’s Day, June 15, everyone enjoyed “Drone Appreciation Day” and a BBQ at the home of Juergen and Brigitte. What wonderful food they prepared, as they opened their lovely home to us! Plus other members brought great treats too. Thank you everyone!

It was such an enjoyable social afternoon. The scenery was so beautiful, on the water, as swans swam by – a whole family of them, with 7 cygnets!

We “crowned” all male members present as Drones and Kings for the Day with yellow construction-paper crowns - just for fun!

Our raffle featured two handmade BBQ aprons specially sewn by my 84-year-old Aunt Ann – one with a bee print fabric and one with a patriotic print perfect for 4th of July.

We also had a reading of Top 10 Tips from:
New York Beekeeper of the Year, Pete Bizzoso
Master Beekeeper and past LIBC President, Ray Lackey
Beekeeper’s Wife, Barbara Munzer

I especially liked Barbara’s last tip: “Above all, remember the great friends and interesting people you have met as a Beekeeper’s Wife!”

Well, I am about to find out what it’s like to be a Beekeeper’s Wife! Your Corresponding Secretary Jim Fischer and I will be married on July 31 at All Souls Church in Manhattan!

Speaking of which - don’t miss next month’s meeting on July 20 at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank (air conditioned!) featuring Dr. Larry Connor reading from his new book “Bee Sex Essentials.”

More good news: Our “winning streak” continues! Our Club gained more new members. This month, we welcome Robert Deichert, Karen Hengeveld, and Deborah Oliviero.

Hey - don't forget that members can bee listed on our Club's Local Honey page to sell honey and other hive products. Just send the following info to webmaster@longislandbeekeepers.org:

Here's another call to update our Swarm List: If you are currently listed and wish to remain so, do nothing. If you wish to be removed from the Swarm List, please notify Corresponding Secretary Jim Fischer at correspondingsecy@longislandbeekeepers.org. If you wish to be added to the Swarm List, please email Jim with your contact information.

If anyone has prizes to donate for the raffle we have at our meetings, they will be very very welcome!

Thanks, everyone. Please know that your participation in every way is valued and appreciated.

Always remember – YOU make our club the BEST it can BEE!
