President's Message for June 2008
Friday, June 06, 2008
Hi everyone!
Good news: Our Club gained more new members again this month! Welcome Pennie and Paul Schwartz!
We had a big turnout for our Progressive Hive Tour on Sunday, May 18. Thank you, members who opened your hives and homes to us: Hope everyone enjoyed the bees and the refreshments:
The Appetizer….Apiary of Rich Blohm, Huntington
with veggies and dips
The Entrée…Apiary of Gerry Maurer-Zanelli, East Northport
with wrap sandwiches and strawberries
The Dessert…Apiary of Fred Munzer, Dix Hills
with cookies
Our Master Beekeepers Rich and Fred taught us so much. One highlight was that we got to see a Queen Bee being born, emerging from her cell. Another exciting sight was Gerry’s big tortoises meandering around her backyard! You sure don’t see that everyday!
You can see pictures of the event here.
Refreshments were provided by the Club.
Please explore our Club website; the Library is now open and ready for you to look through all the great books, magazines, and videos your can borrow.
The Local Honey page is now open too. You can get a free listing to sell honey and other products/services to the public. And believe me – there is demand this allergy season! Just send the following info to webmaster@longislandbeekeepers.org:
Location: Bayport
Beekeeper: John Smith
Phone: 631-555-1212
Email: jsmith@xyz.com
Website: www.xyz.com
Products: Honey, Candles
Thank you, George and Debra Schramm (webmaster and librarian, respectively).
Second reminder about updating our Swarm List: If you are currently listed and wish to remain so, do nothing. If you wish to be removed from the Swarm List, please notify Corresponding Secretary Jim Fischer at correspondingsecy@longislandbeekeepers.org. If you wish to be added to the Swarm List, please email Jim with your contact information.
Hope you all got to see Jim on ABC and Fox TV collecting a swarm at 75th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan while New York’s Finest and New York’s Bravest stood back – afraid of bees! It’s on the website under Beeline News.
Don’t miss our next meeting on Sunday June 15, at the home of Juergen and Brigitte in North Babylon. See your newsletter for directions.
It’s a Father’s Day BBQ and “Drone Appreciation Day” with some fun surprises in store for our Drone members. I’ve been told that LIBC lore says that Father’s Day can be the best-attended meeting of the year. I’m looking forward to it!
Juergen and Brigitte do not have beehives right now. But Juergen is our Club’s Master Gardener who writes the gardening column in our newsletter, so you are sure to learn lots about Long Island gardening, and spend a relaxing afternoon among beauty. I’ve asked our Master Beekeepers to present their “Top 10 Lists” for Long Island beekeeping, “David Letterman style” too. I already received Ray Lackey’s list, and it is great. So, please join us.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE RSVP using this form so we have a head count.
If anyone has prizes to donate for the raffle we have at our meetings, please bring them to the June meeting. We are getting short on items to raffle.
I’ll have a special prize for the BBQ!
Thanks, everyone. Please know that your participation in every way is valued and appreciated.
Always remember – YOU make our club the BEST it can BEE!
