Minutes of Meeting for March 2010

Long Island Beekeepers Club Monthly Meeting Minutes, March 21, 2010
Holbrook Ecology Center

• 44 members signed in.
• This month’s speaker was Frederique Keller, DOM, L.Ac., who has a master’s degree in Oriental Medicine and is a licensed acupuncturist and medical herbalist practicing on Long Island. She is also the president of the American Apitherapy Society, and she gave an overview of “apitherapy.”
• Apitherapy involves using various products of the hive for medicinal purposes.
• Useful products include honey, propolis, pollen, royal jelly, beebread, beeswax, bee venom, and even crushed up whole bees.
• Bee venom therapy seems to work by improving bloodflow and can provide relief for conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, shingles, gout, and lyme disease, to name a few. Bee venom is 100 times more potent than hydrocortisol. Venom cream from Canada or Romania (but not U.S. at this time) is a very good topical for arthritis.
• Raw honey can be used as a topical for healing sores and wounds, and it has been shown to heal ulcers. Honey mixed with essential oils or herbs are very popular in Europe and other countries to help improve overall health.
• Propolis, or “bee glue” lines the hive, seals cracks, and disinfects to help keep the hive healthy. Propolis has great medicinal properties; it is an anti-oxidant, it is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and possibly anti-viral. It is used for treating burns, in dental care, protecting the liver (notably during radiation therapy,) and it has been shown to reduce tumors and cancer. Frederique says she uses 2000 to 5000 mg/day for 5 days in place of an antibiotic.
• Bee Pollen contains vitamins, minerals, protein, amino acid and enzymes, among other things, and is sometimes called “the perfect food.” It is energizing (better than caffeine,) can moderate hunger, and has been shown to have great benefit for brain, heart, liver, digestive, and prostrate health.
• Royal Jelly works throughout the body to promote rejuvenation and stimulates the body’s immune system. Frederique suggests 1.5 to 3 grams/day right before sleep. It is available either freeze dried or fresh frozen. Royal Jelly from China is usually contaminated.
• Reminder about Spring Hive Tour on April 10 to visit Moira Alexander’s and Wayne Vitale’s apiaries.
• Master Beekeepers shared their observations and recommendations on Spring Hive care.
