Minutes of Meeting for November 2008

Long Island Beekeepers Club Monthly Meeting Minutes, November 16, 2008
Holbrook Ecology Center

Former President Ray Lackey led the 22 members in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then discussed hive preparations for fall and the loses of hives in Canada. He mentioned that there will be two upcoming conferences that will be in the December Newsletter that are usually very informative as well as lots of fun. He hopes that members will avail themselves of this opportunity to attend this conferences. Questions were asked about current hive conditions, wax moths and nosema.

Our guest speaker Frank Hurley gave a lively presentation on how to bring lectures to groups for education and entertainment to children and adult about honey bees and beekeeping. He had an excellent flip chart, without the need for fancy electronic equipment . His charts included wonderful hand drawn pictures of the three types of bees, the honeycomb, the bee dance, and explained metamorphosis. His props included a skep, a bee package and an observation hive. He also advised leaving time for questions and answers. Frank concluded with a lovely poem The Bee. (Ed. note: Frank graciously gave us a copy for our enjoyment.)

Miguel Valentin then gave a report on the Empire State meeting regarding bee registration and current research on varroa and nosema. He regretfully informed us of deaths in the beekeeping family.

He hopes that next years Pig Roast will be even bigger and better than ever.

The meeting ended with delicious refreshments and a great raffle. We also like to welcome new members Rich and Jutta Mariotti of Wading River.

Thanks to the BeeHappyHoney.Org company for their generous donation of two tee shirts which we were able to raffle off in our raffle. Check out their new website.
Respectfully submitted.
