Minutes of Meeting for October 2008

Long Island Beekeepers Club Monthly Meeting Minutes, October 19, 2008
Holbrook Ecology Center

• This month’s guest speaker was Ray Lackey, here to describe the “hows & whys” of standardized judging of honey and its derived products.
• Several club members brought in their honey and related products to share with the club and for rating by our experts.
• Separate categories exhibited: beeswax (includes bulk, pure products, & novelty items,) gift packages, photography, novelty food containing honey, comb & bulk honey frames, chunk honey in jars, extracted honey, and creamed honey.
• We had a long check-in with members describing status of their hives, focusing on common concerns during Autumn. There was lively discussion on the pros & cons of screened bottom boards, disease & pest treatments and resistance, winter protection, and preparing combs with starter wax.
• Members are interested in posting status of their hives & upkeep chores on the website each month. This way we can learn from each other & compare geographic trends (for example, LI’s South Shore honey flow tends to lag the North Shore’s a bit, due to the temperate influence of the ocean.)
• Announced the Holiday Party on Sunday, December 7, at Christopher’s in Blue Point. Sit down meal, Santa’s Hive grab-bag gift, RSVP to Conni or Joanne, fee & time to be announced.
• There is a bee-vacuum available for members use… if you have a need, contact Conni or Joanne.

Next meeting will bee November 16.
